Summer 2008: Lesson 1

This summer there are fourteen Sundays. In order to kick-off this unusual number of weeks, we have provided Faith Café users with two unique bonus lessons possibilities. It is up to you to decide which choice is best. Option 1 allows your group to watch an entire episode of the television show," Faith Café". You will find that episode on your curriculum DVD along with Scripture selections and questions for discussion in your Leader's Guide. Option 2 provides suggestions for a service project that your group can launch on this first week and continue throughout the summer.

OPTION #2 - SERVICE PROJECT

Collect School Supplies for Needy Families/Children: With the beginning of summer, vacation (not "back to school shopping") is probably on your mind. However some parents are already worrying about how they'll purchase new clothes and satisfy the long list of school supplies required by their child's teacher this fall. Start now, by tackling a service project that will show the families in your community that you haven't forgotten them. By beginning early, you'll have more time to get a large "stash" of supplies to give away and enable givers to purchase things along.

Print out the list of frequently required school supplies found here or get specific lists from local schools. Pass lists out to your group members.
Use your Faith Café session to get organized and decide who will take leadership roles.
Determine who to help. You may organize this project as an outreach opportunity or a way to care for those within your own church body.
Consider whether you want to adopt one or two families, getting them everything they need (including gift cards to clothing stores) or collect a larger amount of supplies for many.
Decide how you will publicize the project to involve many people.
Before the planning session begins, find out when local schools start so that you will know when your project needs to be completed.
Each week remind your group of the project. Discuss continued progress.
